AJ Lavlu, Baralekha Correspondent: In Baralekha of Moulvibazar, the perpetrators of various criminal activities including smuggling, terrorism, thieves and robbers have established safe settlements in border forests, leased forcibly occupied hills of tea gardens and Khasia Pan capital.

This criminal syndicate is controlling border smuggling including murder, rape, snatching, extortion, drug trade, theft and robbery. The two-and-a-half per cent tea cultivation expansion program set by the government of the orchard owners is also being hampered due to the terrorists occupying the leased hills of some tea gardens. The garden owners demanded an intensification of BGB patrols and a joint police-BGB operation to crack down on terrorists occupying the tea garden land.

According to the investigation, a 40-50 acre hill at Irregul on the eastern side of Ayeshabagh Tea Garden in North Shahbazpur Union bordering the upazila was seized by local terrorists and various criminal activities were carried out. By constructing 10-12 houses in this hill and constructing safe settlements, the terrorists are carrying out various criminal activities including drug smuggling, Chada demands, snatching, rape and threatening to seize and cut off the Panjum of the Khasias.
The workers of Ayeshabagh Tea Garden said that they did not dare to go for any work including picking tea leaves in this hill for fear of terrorists. MA Zaman Suhel, director of the garden, admitted the fact that the leased land of the garden was evicted by the terrorists, adding that locals Farooq Uddin Farai, Masuk Uddin and their men They uprooted innumerable tea trees and shade trees on the hillside of the garden. As the leased hills of the garden have been forcibly occupied by terrorists, the tea cultivation expansion program of two and a half per cent of the total land allotted by the government is being severely hampered.

Bagan has lodged a complaint with the police and the upazila chairman. Meanwhile, Maruf Hasan, manager of Keramatnagar tea garden, alleged that the terrorists had created a paradise of crime by occupying the garden land. A huge tiller leased from his garden has long been occupied by some terrorists who cut down tea trees and smuggle shade trees. As a result, tea cultivation expansion activities are being hampered as per government guidelines.

Sources said that these terrorists have firearms looted in different areas of the upazila. The law enforcement agencies have to remain in the dark to curb crime as the terrorists carry out criminal activities including theft, robbery and snatching and hide in their dormitories built in remote hilly areas.

Baralekha police officer in charge. Moniruzzaman acknowledged the location of the terrorists on the hill occupied by the forcible occupation of the tea garden, saying that due to the presence of border forests in the east of the upazila and Hakaluki Haor in the west, the terrorists are often crossing due to geographical reasons. However, the police have raided these places more than once.
